A Kannada film Mukhyamantri I love you based loosely on the political drama in Karnataka over the past 22 months has run into trouble with former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda filing a defamation suit against makers of the film.
The former Prime Minister has sought Rs 10 crore as damages from filmmaker Ravi Belagere, the editor of a local Kannada tabloid Hai Bangalore, in a court in his home district of Hassan.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Hassan court has asked the makers of the movie not to release the film or publish anything regarding the family of Deve Gowda as long as the case is pending in the court.
Controversy has surrounded the film since the time its makers announced the story idea. The story revolves around a chief minister and his affair with a film actress, and also features the chief minister’s father — a political schemer called Tantri Gowda.
The mahurat shot for the film had been canned in the last week of November.
A new star in Kannada films Vijay has been signed to play the role of the central character. The role of the chief minister’s father is being played by a senior artiste from the Kannada film industry.
Initially, the film’s title had created a stir by itself after it featured the name of an actress who is a part of the Kannada film world and who has been linked to the former chief minister of the state by tabloids. The name was subsequently dropped from the title.
The makers of the film have argued that it is not based on real characters despite the apparent linkages between events in real life and the story’s plot line.
Former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and his father H D Deve Gowda have not commented publicly on the film.
