The VHP today made light of the Government’s attempts to resolve the issue and advised Kanchi Kamakoti Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati not to ‘‘enter the scene every time’’.
VHP vice-president Acharya Giriraj Kishore said: ‘‘The Government’s efforts to resolve the issue are doubtful. Its moves are an eye-wash.’’ The VHP, according to him, had been ‘‘cheated’’ by the Government last year during the shila daan controversy. Therefore, the VHP had resolved not to initiate any talks even though its doors would be open for any proposal from the other side.
Referring to the Government’s application in the Supreme Court for a vacation of stay order on religious programmes at undisputed site at Ayodhya, he said: ‘‘This is too late. Nothing can be done before our dharam sansad. The Government should have approached the Supreme Court two-threemonths earlier. ’’
Meanwhile, the BJP alleged that the Congress was constantly changing its stand on Ayodhya. BJP Parliamentary Party spokesman Vijay Kumar Malhotra said Sonia Gandhi wants a status quo to apparently prolong the issue and create tension between the two communities.
He said the Congress sought the suspension of question hour in the Lok sabha on the opening day of the Budget Session to discuss Ayodhya as if heaven would fall if it wasn’t taken up. But when the BJP offered a discussion the next day, the Congress developed cold feet and said the debate should take place on February 26 after Himachal Pradesh polls, he said.
