JABALPUR, March 15: More than 50 per cent vehicles of different models belonging to various departments and establishments of the state and central government and semi-government organisations and institutions functioning in and around here have been found to be causing excessive pollution in the environment. This was revealed during a four-day special drive launched by the Regional Transport Officer (RTO).
As many as 443 government vehicles belonging to the Ordnance Factory, Khamaria, Central Railway, Madhya Pradesh Electricity Board, Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta, Police, Home Guards, Irrigation, Health, Forest, Labour, Public Health, Engineering and Public Works Departments were checked at a camp organised from March 9 to 12 in the premises of the RTO office.
It was found that the smoke, emanating from the exhaust-pipes of 268 vehicles, was causing considerable environmental pollution.
The managerial levels of these government departments, organisations, institutions and establishments have been sent acircular by the RTO, asking them to get their official vehicles checked or else stern action will be taken against them under the Motor Vehicles Act. The RTO will issue a certificate after the vehicles have been checked.
It may be noted that in order to control environmental pollution hazards, the Supreme Court of India and the Madhya Pradesh High Court have directed central and state governments to adopt effective measures in the larger interest as the dark black smoke released by auto vehicles contain poisonous gases which are harmful to public health.
