Contending that the government was ‘strong enough to manage’ terrorism, Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Monday said, however, ‘weapons’ alone will not be able to help combat the menace in the country.
Holding that over 99 per cent people in the country were peace-loving, Patil said only a ‘fraction’ of the population was ‘creating problem by spreading terror’ and that the country will be able to get rid of the menace.
“I have been telling the people that we will manage it (terrorism). We are strong enough to manage it,” he said after conferring the Dayawati Modi Award for Art, Culture and Education in New Delhi to Prof Lokesh Chandra for his contributions to art and culture.
“We try to depend on weapons to combat terrorism. But will that succeed? If there has to be tranquility, will weapons alone be able to achieve this? There has to be an understanding that if you want to live in peace, you have to help others live in peace also. This can be achieved through culture,” Patil said.
He described culture as an understanding of unity of existence.
“The culture unites human being with plants, human being with human beings and human being with God,” he said.
Patil said, “A fraction of population are creating problem by spreading terror”.
“If you develop art and culture, that will give you a holistic life,” the minister said.
Patil stressed on strengthening cultural ties with other countries to resolve differences.
“The cultural relationships between countries will help maintaining peace and tranquility better,” he said.
