MUMBAI, JUNE 28: Former chief minister and chairman of the state Water Conservation Advisory Committee Sudhakarrao Naik today said the state government was conducting a probe into the alleged irregularities and misappropriation of funds by voluntary organisations while implementing the government-aided water conservation projects.
“There are no details on how much money was allotted to each voluntary organisation and how did they utilise it. There is a possibility of misappropriation worth crores of rupees,” Naik said in a press conference here.
Minister of state for water conservation Dr N P Hirani said stern action would be taken against those found guilty of misusing government funds after the probe was completed.
Naik also expressed dissatisfaction over the way the water conservation programme was being implemented in the state. “We have received complaints from the villagers where voluntary organisations have been handed over the water conservation programmes,” he pointed out. The state government would inspect the ongoing water conservation schemes and its report would be made public, he said.
“I have suggested to the state government to form a committee of elected representative in each district to supervise the implementation of the water conservation projects,” Naik disclosed.
Naik said he toured almost all districts of the state to get first-hand information of the ongoing water conservation projects.
