CHANDIGARH, April 21: The Bharatiya Janata Party government’s functioning has been "disastrous" so far, former prime minister Chandra Shekhar said today. Going by its working, "the government does not seem to be stable", he remarked.

Speaking of the recent developments in the political arena, he said "the indications are not good" what with various ministers giving controversial statements and "speaking in different tones" on crucial issues. He refused to comment on how long the present government would survive, only saying that "it would all depend on how the government functions".

Talking to The Indian Express here, Chandra Shekhar held forth on the compulsions of a coalition, saying "one should be prepared to take on anything" as everything worked on mutual terms. At present, there was "much chance of misunderstanding", he added.

On the economic policies of the present government, Shekhar said the "net result of such policies would be that industry would suffer". As for his own politicalambitions in the present scenario, Shekhar said he would not side the Congress, nor did he talk of toppling the BJP government. "I am not in a position to form a government," he said. He was in the city to appear before the Punjab and Haryana High Court as a witness in the election petition filed by Ramesh Rana of Samata Party challenging the election of the BJP’s Ramesh Kashyap from Haryana’s Gharaunda Assembly constituency in the 1996 polls. The court asked him to identify three letters written by him to the Election Commission regarding "bungling" and "irregularities" during the election. He said while two letters were written to Election Commissioner G V G Krishnamoorthy, another was written to the then Chief EC T N Seshan.
