To keep in with the changing times, the I&B Ministry has hit upon a novel idea of disseminating news.
So far, press releases, nearly 2000 copies of one news item, were disbursed by the PIB every day, extolling the virtues of the Government. Considering releases are a waste of newsprint, audio tapes and CDs will be made available on demand to journalists now.
A senior official said, the move is in keeping with the quick-changing pace of media. ‘‘Developed countries make information available to the media using the latest technology,’’ he said.
Though officials are not putting a figure to what this would cost the Government, it is learnt that the budget set aside for the National Media Centre, roughly Rs 35 crore, will take care of the proposal to set up an audio-visual cell which will keep tab of events of importance. It is this cell that will make available audio and video on demand to journalists from print and electronic media.
