MUMBAI, JAN 7: Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Nitin Gadkari, has been appointed as the chairman of the National Rural Road Development Corporation by the Union Government.

The Committee also includes former State PWD secretary and chairman of the Road Accidents Committee S R Tambe and financial consultant Dhananjay Mungle.

According to a release issued by Gadkari’s office, the announcement comes following a decision made by the Union Ministry of Rural Development when it constituted the National Rural Road Development Committee. The Ministry was also considering raising funds for construction and maintenance of rural roads and to execute works under the programme in all the states in a smooth, efficient and time-bound manner, the release stated.

Before such a corporation was formed, it was proposed to undertake advance planning to identify unconnected villages, the total length and specification of roads as per soil condition, arrange funds from within country and external sources and suggest implementing agencies. To take care of the advance planning, the National Rural Road Development Committee was set up.

Gadkari, who was earlier the Minister for Public Works Department in the Shiv Sena-BJP government, has already completed the construction of 55 flyovers in Mumbai and connected rural villages of the State through the road network.
