The scare is over. With the final human sample testing negative for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, the Government today declared that the country had no case of the avian flu being transmitted to humans.

Speculation of the flu jumping to humans had been rife ever since preliminary tests on 95 human samples isolated five cases for more tests while ruling as safe 90 samples.

Health Secretary P K Hota confirmed today that “the (last) sample which was sent to NIV, Pune, is also negative for the bird flu virus.” Four of the five samples had tested negative yesterday.

The Government, however, said that the health alert would continue in and around Navapur in Nandurbar. “This is necessary for sustained elimination of the flu. Culling and disposal will continue and symptomatic cases have to be reported. Samples will be taken whenever necessary,” Hota said.
