The crisis in Goa appears to have blown over with NCP’s central leadership accepting Congress’s assurance that it will induct its Benaulim MLA Mickey Pacheco into the cabinet at a later date.

However, NCP’s Goa unit president Dr Wilfred D’Souza has refused to back down and has declined to assume office as deputy chief minister until his colleague is given a berth in the cabinet.

At a press conference today, NCP observers Chhagan Bhujbal and Tariq Anwar briefed the media about the latest.‘‘We spoke to chief minister Pratapsinh Rane who assured us that he will take a decision within eight days,’’ said Bhujbal, adding that the Congress had earlier assured that all five MLAs who had resigned from the Parrikar-ministry would be given a ministerial post.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Bhujbal threw more light on his discussions with Rane. ‘‘The CM has promised a ministerial berth for NCP MLA Mickey Pacheco during the third phase of the expansion of his ministry. We are satisfied with this assurance,’’ he said, adding the NCP would not pull down the Rane government. Bhujbal said the third phase of the ministerial expansion was scheduled for June 18.

When asked why the NCP could not compromise as its MLA Wilfred D’Souza has been appointed Deputy CM, Bhujbal shot back, ‘‘In a coalition, you require two hands to clap.’’

Meanwhile, NCP state chief D’Souza said he would not assume office unless Pacheco was sworn in, signalling his resentment over talks held by Bhujbal and Anwar with the CM.
