AMRITSAR, Aug 18: Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers Association (GNDUTA) today condemned the university’s move to implement the self assessment scheme for teachers.
R.K. Bedi and Devinder Singh, the president and secretary, in a joint statement said that they would not accept the evaluation of their work by students, the university authorities should rather evaluate their working and make introspection.
V.K. Sharma, the district president of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, in a separate statement said that it would not be practically possible to implement the self evaluation system. He said that a good teacher might not be popular among the students and teacher who otherwise interacted with the students could have more face value.
He said it would be irrelevant to take opinion of students who have been around for five years about the teachers academic standard and relevance of professional courses.
He said self assessment was a European model and in India where ground realities were different such schemes would not work.
Sharma said in a country where teachers were forced to go on strike to get better salaries it would be unfair to expect high standards of education in government and private institutes. He said none of the colleges could meet parameters set by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
Concern over corruption: Surinder Kumar Billa, the president of All India Hindu Shiv Sena, has expressed concern over the wide spread corruption in the social welfare office, Amritsar. In a press release he alleged that it was easy to get old age pension through middle men than through proper channel.
He demanded adequate steps to curb the menace of bribing.
