AMRITSAR, June 16: A deep-rooted conspiracy has been alleged in the manhandling and abduction of a university lecturer by the police from outside the university gate in broad daylight here today.

While Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) S. S. Srivastava expressed his inability to give details about the alleged abduction for want of information, the Guru Nanak Dev University Teacher’s Association (GNDUTA) fired a salvo against the police, threatening to stage a dharna against the police action tomorrow. According to details, Devinder Singh, a lecturer in psychology, was picked up by the police at about 2 p.m. from outside the university gate on Ram Tirath Road, when he was accompanied by a colleague Mohanpal Singh Ishar, a reader in Pharmaceutical Sciences Department.

Parminder Singh, secretary GNDUTA, alleged that the police seemed to be waiting in a white Maruti car with tinted glass along with a police gypsy before the incident took place. He said Mohanpal Singh had asked the police, the reason for the action and was pushed back by the police, resulting in bruises on his arms. The police threw Devinder Singh in the car and fled, he alleged. Describing the action as brazen, the association alleged that it was an extreme case of police high-handedness. Demanding the lecturer’s Immediate release, the association threatened to stage a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office on June 17. Meanwhile, the police have sounded a red alert in the area, as they were not sure whether the lecturer was lifted by the police, said Srivastav.

The ASP also assured the university association of prompt action in tracing the missing lecturer.
