November 25: PONTA DELGADA: A Portuguese Air Force helicopter on Tuesday rescued 21 crewmen from a Panamanian cargo vessel torn in two by violent storms off the mid-Atlantic Azores islands. But the Portuguese Navy said the ship’s stern section did not appear to be in immediate danger of sinking and nine other crewmen would remain on board in an attempt to save it. The rescued men were part of a 34-strong, mainly Italian, crew who took refuge in the stern of the stricken MSC Carla after it broke apart in gales that whipped up 10-metre waves.
