Tyson on trial for bloodying Green in street brawl

NEW YORK: A 1998 Harlem Street fight over promoter Don King failing to pay fighter Mitch “Blood” Green $450,000 could end up costing former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson $25 million.

Green is suing Tyson for that sum here in New York’s supreme court on charges of civil assault for an early morning beating outside a clothing store.

Green, 39, contends that King paid him only $30,000 after losing a 10-round decision to Tyson in 1986 when both fighters were to have been paid the same amount and Tyson received $450,000 for the bout.

The fighters met two years later at Dapper Dan’s, a 24-hour clothing store, and green sought a rematch but tyson said no. Green’s lawyer said tyson then offered to settle the dispute on the spot, landing a surprise punch to the face that broke green’s nose and knocked him out.

Francescoli `Player of the Year’

BUENOS AIRES: Uruguayan Enzo Francescoli has been voted Argentina’s player of the year for the third time.

The 35-year-old, who plays for Buenos Aires giants River Plate, was given the annual Golden Ball award by local sport writers, equalling Diego Maradona’s record of three titles. Francescoli, currently sidelined through injury, also won the award for the 1984-1985 season and again 10 seasons later.

ATLANTIC CITY: Trainer Emanuel Steward says that the World Boxing Council heavyweight title holder Lennox Lewis will be sorely tested by challenger Andrew Golota and that is just what the champion needs. “I wanted Golota,” said Steward, whose man will fight Golota this Saturday night. “People have the perception that Lennox got his championships the cheap way, that he isn’t a real true champion.”

Lewis was handed the WBC title in 1993 when Riddick Bowe threw the belt into a garbage can.
