SYDNEY: A punter who gambled a total of $ 38,000 on defending champion Patrick Rafter and world number one Pete Sampras winning their opening rounds in the US Open has lost $ 22,000.

Sampras did not even make it onto the court for his first match, withdrawing with an ijured back, while Rafter’s shoulder injury forced the Australian to quit his opening match with France’s Cedric Pioline.

The Indian client placed $ 22,000 on Rafter at 2-7 to beat Pioline and had $ 16,000 on Sampras in the $ 14.5 million tennis tournament, Alice Springsbookmakers Centrebet said.

The panel also said the IOC itself should be more accountable by simplifying its financial records to make it easier for the public to understand its sources of income and expenditures.

It urged the IOC to continue making the Olympics open to all by promoting the use of free television outlets, rather than pay TV channels, and by encouraging affordable seating prices at Olympic venues.
