I’m a tennis tourist, says Becker

SPLIT: German tennis star Boris Becker has confirmed that his days of playing Grand Slam tennis tournaments were over. “I’m a tennis tourist now. I wouldn’t dream of playing a Grand Slam again or collecting points for the world rankings,” the three-time Wimbledon winner told the Croatian weekly newspaper Globus yesterday.

Thirty-year-old Becker, now ranked 65 in the world, takes on the title-holder Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia on Thursday in the last 16 of the $400,000 Croatian Indoors tournament.

“I am not playing any more Grand Slams not because of lack of energy but but because I cannot play a whole season at full power,” Becker.

Indian pair fifth

SHARJAH: Wael Wattar and Eidi of Syria-Lebanon today lifted the coveted pairs championship at the sixth Sharjah Bridge Festival here.

Their three session cumulative score of 59.73 (1257.83 mps) was a clear one mp ahead of the second placed Pakistan combination of Rasid-ul-Ghazi and Rashid Jaffer, whotallied 58.77 (1237.63 mps).

In fifth place were Vishu-Iyengar, Krishnan-Shyamsunder with 57.29 were seventh and Dilip Gidwani playing with Danielle from France was eighth with 57.11.

Vishu-Iyengar were second till the penultimate round and a good score in the last three boards would have seen the Indian pair the winner’s prize.

Players return

NAGANO, JAPAN: The German hockey team sent home two injured players today, further depleting a squad that must play two first-round games without NHL stars Olaf Kolzig, Uwe Krupp and Marco Strum.

Michael Heidt, a 34-year defender and team leader, was declared out with a shoulder injury and forward Leo Stefan left Nagano with an injured knee.

“They are two excellent players who would have made a big difference for us, but we had to nominate our team on January 19 and we had to estimate who was going to be healthy three weeks later,” coach George Kingston said.
