MELBOURNE: Questions over the bowling action of Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan have resurfaced after a leading South African umpire joined in the chorus of doubters.

South African official Peter Van Der Merwe, now in Australia as a match referee for the tri-series limited-overs tournament between Australia, England and Sri Lanka, said he would be submitting a report to the International Cricket Council (ICC) asking them to review his suspicious action.

“It is certainly not the standard action,” the Herald-Sun newspaper quoted him as saying. “Part of my job is to look out for bowlers with doubtful actions. I will be sending a report to the ICC and they can handle it how they see fit.”

Sentiment shadows ahead of meeting

MELBOURNE: The cream of men’s tennis will meet on Saturday to discuss Petr Korda’s positive steroid test, with sentiment apparently split over whether their Czech colleague should be expelled from their ranks.

LAUSANNE: Juan Antonio Samaranch says he will not resign over the Salt Lake City bribery scandal, declaring he will remain as IOC president until the last minute” of his term.

In an interview with Associated Press,

Samaranch dismissed calls by several Olympic-related officials that he should step down to accept responsibility for misconduct committed by IOC members during his leadership.

“Some people are saying this, but I have been elected by the IOC members, and if I have the confidence of the members of the IOC, I will remain as president of the IOC until the last minute of my mandate,” he said.
