India win Rashid International volleyball tournament

DUBAI: India rallied to win the Rashid International Volleyball Tournament for the third consecutive year by beating the UAE Senior team 11-15, 14-16, 15-12, 15-6, 15-10 last night.

Indian coach PC Pandian was adjudged the best coach, Ashish Arora best blocker and Ravi Kant Reddy the best setter for the tournament which was dominated by the experienced Indian team. Indian defeated Lebanon in the semi-finals and were champion in the first two editions 1996 and 1997.

Ambrose in squad for Kingston Test

KINGSTON: Curtly Ambrose, rumoured to be on the verge of retirement, was named in the West Indies’ squad of 13 for the first Test against England at Sabina Park, Kingston, starting on January 29.

Kalpage replaces Tillekaratne

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka today dropped middle-order batsman Hashan Tillekaratne and brought in all-rounder Ruwan Kalpage into a squad of 14 players for the three-match One-Day International series against Zimbabwe. The first match is scheduled to be played in Colombo tomorrow.

Tillekaratne has been shown the door after a string of failures which brought him a mere 117 runs in his last seven outings on the international scene at an average of just 19.5.

The squad: Arjuna Ranagunga (captain), Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu, Aravinda de Silva, Roshan Mahanama, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Upul Chandana, Kumara Dharmasena, Chaminda Vaas, Ravindra Pushpakumara, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sajeewa de Silva, Mahela Jayawardena and Ruwan Kalpage.
