Former Wimbledon queen Helen Wills Moody dead

CALIFORNIA: Tennis great Helen Wills Moody, who won eight Wimbledon titles and was one of the premier figures in America’s golden era of sports, has died yesterday at Carmel Convalescent Hospital. She was 92. Known for hitting the ball harder than any woman, she ruled tennis in the 1920s and ’30s. Nicknamed “little miss poker face” and “Queen Helen,” Moody won 31 major titles. Besides Wimbledon, she captured seven US crowns and four French championships. She won her first US Championship in 1923 and retired after winning the 1938 Wimbledon. She was 18-2 in singles matches at the Wightman Cup, a prestigious women’s team event.

Shahbaz (sr) may return in Pak side

NEW DELHI: Pakistan hockey captain Tahir Zaman today lauded the revival of hockey series with India after a long gap and said this should benefit both the Asain stalwarts now living in the shadows of European supremacy. The skillful inside forward gave a call for both India and Pakistan taking up coaching in a scientific manner if they had to challenge other top teams and attributed success of Europe to this factor. The row between the Pakistan Federation and star forward Shahbaz Ahmed (sr) had been resolved and the former captain might return to the national squad, Zaman, who is leading the Punjab XI, Pakistan at the Lal Bahadur Shastri tournament told reporters here today.

Bubka voted `Champion of Champions’

PARIS: World pole vault champion Sergei Bubka was crowned “Champion of Champions” for the second time by L’Equipe’ on Friday. Michael Jordan was second and Pete Sampras third in the poll by the staff of the French sports newspaper.
