NAGPUR, JULY 9: In a bizarre incident, a 23-year-old girl was "married off" to a youth while she was in a state of semi-consciousness after the youth and his relatives allegedly administered her some sedative through a sweet. The Sitabuldi police have since booked the `groom' and four of his relatives, all hailing from Pusad in Yavatmal district, on charges of cheating and common motive.The girl, hailing from Nehru Nagar locality at Khamla here, had lodged a complaint in this regard with the Pusad police but the matter was handed over to the Sitabuldi police as the offence had occurred in a lodge at Modi Lane No 2 here between June 19 and 21.Those booked were identified as Vishwajit Ramchandra Kapile, the `groom', his brother, Ravi, relatives, Ramesh Ganpat Jogi, Nanda and another woman who was not named.The police said, it all began on May 14 when the girl happened to meet Vishwajit while the two were travelling to Nagpur from Yavatmal in a private luxury bus. Subsequently, she got familiar to theother members of Vishwajit's family.The Kapiles and their relatives were in Nagpur between June 19 and 21 when they called the girl on telephone and asked her to visit them at Amrita lodge where they were staying. When she went there, they exchanged pleasantries and gave her some sweets sprinkled with sedative, which the unsuspecting girl consumed, the police said.As the drug started to have its effect on the girl, the Kapiles asked her to wear a new saree and also put a mangalsutra around her neck, she alleged in her plaint. They also collected her signatures on some blank register forms and got the "marriage ceremony" recorded on a video cassette and also clicked some photographs.It was only when the effect of the sedative started wearing off that the girl realised what had happened. Returning home, she narrated the incident to her father and a complaint was lodged with the police at Pusad. The same was handed over to the Sitabuldi police under whose jurisdiction the offence occurred.Further probe is on.
