A 15-year-old girl, Asha Banik, committed suicide at Liluah Home for Destitute Women in Howrah on Tuesday.
Banik’s body was found in one of the toilets of the home.
The police said that railway employees spotted her loitering at the Howrah station and reported her to the Golabari police station on September 17. The police took her to the Don Bosco Asylum the same day.
“The asylum, however, refused to admit her as it has no facilities for young girls. Banik was then taken to a centre run by the Howrah Welfare Association, where she stayed for nearly two weeks. On October 1, she was transferred to the Liluah Home,” a police officer said.
Banik, a resident of Bankura district, was mentally instable when she was admitted to the home.
In the last three months, this is the third instance when an inmate of Liluah Home has committed suicide or attempted to do so.
On August 13, a 30-year-old pregnant woman jumped off the first floor of the Howrah General Hospital, injuring herself seriously. She was admitted to the hospital’s maternity ward a day before.
A day after the incident, another pregnant inmate of the home attempted suicide by jumping off the second floor of the same hospital, minutes after she was admitted there. She too was critically injured.
