Chandigarh Police have booked Dr Gurdeep Kaur, daughter of former President Giani Zail Singh, on charges of causing death due to negligence after a woman being treated by her died at a clinic in the city on Monday.

The case was registered after one Babloo Yadav complained that his wife Poonam had died while being treated by Dr Kaur. Doctors at the General Hospital in Sector 16, who conducted Poonam’s postmortem, have not yet given their report.

“She was eight months pregnant. We went to Dr Kaur who agreed to abort the foetus. She took Poonam inside and after about 20 minutes, came out and asked me to rush her to hospital. I took her to General Hospital, Sector 16, where doctors told me that Poonam was dead,” Babloo said.

However, Dr Kaur claimed there was no medical negligence. “She suffered a cardiac arrest. It was not an illegal abortion as the couple had consented. The moment the patient’s condition deteriorated, I asked her husband to rush her to hospital.”

The investigating officials have not yet arrested Dr Kaur and have decided to wait for the postmortem report.
