MUMBAI, May 9: It was an unsung death for a gifted yesteryears singing hero Talat Mahmood who died of cardiac arrest on Saturday morning. He was 75 years old and is survived by a son and daughter.
He was buried at the Juhu burial ground.
Even as rich tributes were being paid to the king of ghazals, maestro Naushad poignantly said,Ghazal adhura ho gaya (Ghazal remained incomplete). He sang his first song for me in Babul — "Mera jivan saathi bichad gaya, Khatam kahani ho gaya. Today this song fits his death,".
Recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 1922, Talat Mahmood was born in Lucknow and after completing his intermediate joined New Theatre in Calcutta. He acted as a hero in the company’s film Samapti. He worked in two more films for the company before migrating to Mumbai where he starred as a hero in 10 films.
