April 19: Ghatkopar YMCA boys moved into the quarter-finals of the Colgate-Palmolive DB Prabhu Memorial Basketball Tournament (under-13) by beating Loyola School, Pune, 33-28 in an exciting Group D match at the Indian Gymkhana here today.

Ghatkopar YMCA had taken a slender five-point lead in the first quarter (12-7). They maintained it till the third quarter but Karan Mehta and Siddharth Akhlate narrowed the gap to three points for Loyale in the last quarter.

However, some fine ball handling by Pratim and Vivek saw the match through for the winners.

In a boys Group A match, hosts Indian Gymkhana defeated Central YMCA 41-33 to enter the quarter-finals. Central had shown promise at the start of the game and even held a slender one-point lead at half-time (15-14). But as Venkatesh Chary and Akshay Ganesh started draining shots, the lead changed hands and the match gradually went out of Central YMCA’s grips.

Venkatesh scored all his 8 points in the last quarter and this made the difference. RobinRodrigues controlled both the offensive and defensive boards very well and was smart with his assists.

Group D: Ghatkopar YMCA 33 (S Vivek 7, Pratim 7) bt Loyola (Pune) 28 (Siddharth Khalate 8, Karan Mehta 8); Loyola 51 (Nikhil Kanitkar 9, Karan Shetty 9, Rohit Barve 9) bt Mahatma 4.

Girls (Group A): Agradneya 51 (Madhura Bodas 16, Manali Kulkarni 8) bt Agnels Gymkhana 17 (R Urmila 6). Group B: Satara EMS 20 (Priya More 12) bt Abhyudaya 0.

Sukhtankar scores

Our Lady of Egypt (Kalina) beat Holy Family (Andheri) 1-0 with a 15th minute goal by Sukhtankar in the Brother Eulalio Vaz Memorial football tournament at the St Joseph’s Technical Ground (Kurla) today.

Ray Finch found Neil D’Costa who headed the ball well for Sukhtankar to do therest.

Rumania triumph

Rumania won the 18th Brother Paulus Football Tournament when they defeated Fleetfooters 4-3 via the tie-breaker in the final at the St. Francis D’Assisi ground, Borivli today. The match ended goalless after regulation time and extra time.

Raghu Kanalkar, Sameer Shaikh, Anil Thomas and Zaheed Ansari scored for the winners while Vijay Kunder, Jaya Salian, Walter Aranha.
