Several Gujarat Muslim employees of PSUs, banks, private firms and even the Railways, have requested for a transfer outside the state, most of them through their unions.
While many simply mention ‘‘humanitarian grounds’’— leaving it to the management to understand the rest—others say clearly they don’t feel safe.
At least 27 employees of Western Railway, mostly at Kalupur and Sabarmati stations, have applied for transfers. ‘‘They were all affected during the violence and by March 3, most of them left for their native places. Recently we started getting transfer requests,’’ confirms Western Railway Mazdoor Sangh chief J V Mahurkar. Says Sr Divisional Manager K Albela to whom the requests have been forwarded: ‘‘We’ll see what we can do. If it’s required, we will consider.’’
• The State Bank of India has already transferred eight employees. Two or three more transfers are expected, says S A Qadri, union chief. One is of Rashid Khalpa, an officer and the son of Godhra’s ex-MLA Abdul Rahim Khalpa.
• The Oil and Natural Gas Commission has got at least half a dozen transfer requests from Muslim staff at its Chandkheda work station.
• Some Bharatiya Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officers have also asked for a move, confirmed V K Darji, Assistant General Manager (Staff and Personnel).
