Even as the images of Black Sunday haunt survivors, a Germany-based organisation has come forward to train volunteers to help victims cope with their nightmares.

Realising that providing food and shelter to them is not enough, Terre Des Hummes is sponsoring a workshop on ‘‘psycho-social care’’ for the NGOs, activists and volunteers working in the tsunami-ravaged areas of Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts. This programme has been organised by the Centre for Social Education and Development, Coimbatore.

‘‘We will try to teach the victims that phobia, anger, nightmare and fear are normal reactions to calamities like the tsunami,’’ said S. Niveditha of the Department of Psychiatric Social Work, NIMHANS. She and her colleague, L. Ponnuchamy, are the pointpersons for the Kanyakumari programme. Ponnuchamy said they will be ‘‘offering disaster management package in three phases. In the first two days, we will provide basic intervention in psycho-social care. A month later, we will dedicate a whole day on ‘working with women’, and in the final phase will address children-related issues’’.
