Union Minister for Defence George Fernandes today severely criticised the US saying it had invaded Iraq alleging it possessed weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), but till date no trace has been found.

‘‘America changed its stand continuously. First it said Iraq had possessed WMDs. Later, they demanded Saddam Hussein and his followers must leave the country. But where are those WMDs? In fact, they were looking for some pretext to invade the country,’’ Fernandes said at the inaugural session of the 102th annual general meeting of the Merchants Chamber of Commerce here.

Fernandes also made it clear that India would have no role in the reconstruction of post-war Iraq. ‘‘It’s the job of those who have destroyed the country,’’ he said.
