ATHENS, Aug 2: Australia, led by veteran Andrew Gaze, swept past Lithuania, 71-61, in their opening second round group game at the World Basketball Championship, today.
Gaze, 33, playing like a man inspired, was top scorer with 24 points as the "boomers" greatly increased their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.
In another second round tie, Yugoslavia swept away Canada, 95-55, to confirm their billing as tournament favourites.
It was by far the best performance the Aussies have turned in at the Championship. After losing their first two games, they at last began to look like possible medal prospects.
Lithuania, Olympic bronze medallists at the last two Games, were a big disappointment. After winning all three of their first-round games they looked out of sorts, despite leading 37-35 at halftime.
