A day after he slit the throat of a Manipuri girl and injured her friend at Gateway of India, relatives and acquaintances said Uzer Patel was a disturbed, unemployed 25-year-old who probably committed the murder because he wanted to be known.

“He (Uzer) is not insane. He just wanted to do something to become famous,’’ said Uzer’s uncle Ilias Dharwad, who had employed Uzer in his factory for a

year.

On Saturday evening, Additional Commissioner of Police S P Yadav said Uzer just “looked mentally unstable’’.

“Only a medical examination can tell. Till then, he is a murder accused, and the police are investigating,’’ Police Commissioner A N Roy said.

“Yesterday, Uzer appeared inconsistent because he had just committed a murder. He wrongly identified himself as Junaid,’’ said a senior police officer. Junaid is Uzer’s elder brother.

“He created some trouble at the factory, so I asked him to leave,’’ said Dharwad. This was four months ago. “Ghar par pada rehta tha, kuch kam nahi karta tha. Bas ghar se paise leta tha. (He would stay home and never work. He used to ask his family for money).’’

Dharwad said Uzer had a calm demeanour but was prone to fits of temper. “Two days ago he told some neighbours that he would kill his parents,’’ he said.

“I gave him Rs 5 last Sunday for chai. He used to ask me for money often,’’ said Majid, who works in a Jawahar Nagar factory.
