Former world chess champion Garry Kasparov entered Russia’s presidential race, elected overwhelmingly as the candidate for the country’s beleagured opposition coalition.Founded by Kasparov, the Other Russia Opposition Coalition unites several prominent Russian politicians and political groups. Kasparov got 379 votes out of 498 votes cast, defeating five candidates including former member of St Petersburg’s Legislative Assembly Sergei Gulyayev, ex-Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and former Central Bank chairman Viktor Gerashchenko.“I will do everything possible for the ideas of the Other Russia to succeed,” Kasparov said. But he warned that the work before the movement was not easy. “This will work only if we stay united,” he said, adding, “I know that the road will be difficult.”
