Captain Sourav Ganguly hopes India will perform to their potential despite arriving in Bulawayo just a day before their triangular series match against New Zealand.

“That’s the itinerary we were provided with,” Ganguly told a news conference in Bulawayo on Thursday.

“We were not aware of it until we landed in Zimbabwe (in Harare on Tuesday) when we were told we were to go to Bulawayo today.”

“We can’t bother about it now because the game is tomorrow, we’ve just got to prepare ourselves for that.”

Ganguly said India had a good record when they had to play soon after travelling.

“We went to Toronto straight from Singapore in 1999, we played four tournaments in a row that year.”

“We played in Singapore and flew the next day, and landed two nights before our first match. We had one practice session and played the West Indies, and we won that competition.”

New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming said he would be interested to see how India’s energy levels held up. “If they win then it will be a smart move but if they struggle, as I expect them to, it wouldn’t be such a smart move.”

Ganguly said he was concerned about India’s results over the past year in which they have won eight of their 22 one-day internationals and lost 13.

“In the last 11 to 12 months we have not performed up to our potential, as we had done for two years prior to that, and we have to change that.”

“In the past Indians used to score a lot of hundreds in one-day cricket, and that has not been the case over the last year.”
