MUMBAI, DEC 14: A member of the Katta Shekar gang was shot dead in an encounter with police at Mira Road late Monday night.

The police were alerted when they saw five men speeding in a white Maruti car towards Mira Road. The vehicle was intercepted near Sarita Complex on the Bunderwadi Chowpatty Road around 9.45 pm. According to police inspector Gokul Patil attached to the Mira Road police station, the gangsters opened fire when they were challenged by the police party. While four associates managed to escape under cover of darkness, Rajaram Naidu was seriously injured in the subsequent exchange of fire, Patil added.

Naidu was taken to the Public Health Unit at Bhayander, where he was declared dead. Two country-made revolvers were recovered from him.Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Param Bir Singh told The Indian Express Naidu was involved in a robbery at Ambika Petrol pump on Saturday. A police constable was shot at when he tried to resist the gangsters, Singh added.

On December 7, Naidu and hisassociates allegedly robbed a shopkeeper at Mira Road. A stolen watch and gold chain have been identified, claimed police.

Police records revealed that Naidu had several offences like robbery and dacoity against him under the jurisdiction of Matunga, Ghatkopar, Dharavi and Mulund police stations. He was said to be a key associate of gang leader Katta Shekar, who was also killed in an encounter with officers attached to the Crime Branch of Mumbai police early this year.

Members of the Katta Shekar alias Nadar gang specialise in armed dacoity. They are known to attack police parties when challenged, police sources said.
