FATEHGARH SAHIB, Aug 18: In the name of an alleged clerical mistake the authorities of the Christian Medical College of Ludhiana have virtually put the future of a number of recently admitted B. Sc nursing students at stake, the authorities have decided to cancel their admissions due to which unrest and resentment is prevailing among these students.

The college authorities are justifying their action, when contacted CMC Director Mohan Verghese said that they were trying to give a chance to all the deserving and eligible candidates who could not appear in the interview due to the postal strike.

According to the information available, the students being sacked from the course were called upon by the authorities for admission on July 15 and according to them, they were given admissions as per their merit after acceptance of their fees.

These students received a notice dated August 10, signed by the registrar of the college that the letters inviting candidates for interview on July 15 could not be dispatched till July 17 due to inadvertent mistake, candidates with more marks could not come for the counselling. The error on the part of the office in dispatch of letters was compounded by postal strike, the notice said.

The registrar in the notice said that in fairness to all candidates and to correct the mistake it had become necessary to cancel all the admissions from the waiting list. However, before passing a final order of cancellation and before refunding the fees they were given an opportunity to say anything in their defence and show cause only for two days.

However, in the prospectus it is clearly stated that in case an applicant does not receive any communication by July 7, due to postal delay or otherwise, should find out from the Registrars office if her name is in the provisional selected or waiting list or not, no other means of communication shall be entertained, it further said.

Interestingly, Verghess admitted that the classes of the students were still going on but the attendance was not being marked. The students are planning to move court.
