Kannur, Jan 2: Exactly a month after the outbreak of largescale violence in the district which claimed six lives, activists of the CPI(M) and the RSS-BJP reportedly engaged in a fresh bout of violence in the volatile Panur region here last night in which two CPI(M) and an equal number of RSS workers were injured.
Police sources told PTI that a group of unidentified persons, suspected to be activists of the Sangh Parivar, hurled bombs at a CPI(M) rally at Kattumukku around 8 pm last night, injuring two CPI(M) workers, Anish and Ashraf. However, an RSS worker, Sudeendharan, was also reported to be injured in a counter attack, police said.
Within a few hours, in a retaliatory attack, a group of persons, allegedly volunteers of the CPI(M), waylaid an RSS man, Ravi, in a nearby area and inflicted severe injuries on him. All the injured had been hospitalised while Ravi, whose condition turned critical, had been rushed to the Kozhikode Medical College hospital for expert treatment.
Police, who conducted extensive raids in the area, had taken about 20 persons into custody for interrogation, the sources said, adding that a heavy posse of police personnel had been deployed in Panur and neighbouring areas to check fresh incidents.
Meanwhile, a peace meet had been convened here later in the day following a district committee meeting held in the morning which was chaired by District Collector K R Jyotilal and attended by senior police officials and various political party leaders.
Last night’s bomb attacks were suspected to be in sequel to sporadic incidents of violence reported in the area since Saturday last, police added.
