French PM Jean-Pierre Raffarin said on Tuesday that Muslim headscarves must be banned from public schools as they undermine the French

republican ideal of freedom and equality. He rejected arguments from observant Muslims and Jews that headscarves are required by their religions, he said: ‘‘Religion cannot be political.’’

Until now, most French officials, including President Jacques Chirac, have avoided casting the debate on banning religious symbols as singling out Islam. The law would ban from public elementary and high schools ‘‘ostensibly’’ religious symbols including the Muslim headscarf, the Jewish skullcap and Christian crosses. —(NYT)
