AUG 24: Frank Martin of Stanislaus High School and Bai Avaibai Framji Petit High School lass Gayatri Gandhi overcame intermittent rains to race away with the under-17 boys and girls titles respectively during the United Athletes Sports Club’s ninth Inter School Road Races at Bandra, this morning.

While Martin clocked 18 mins and 48 secs to upstage his IES New English challengers Nitin Swargiya (second) and Sandeep Raut (third), Gayatri overcame stiff resistance to surge at the finish by a second (14.14) to pip Sabaa Khan of St Joseph’s Convent.

St Stanislaus and Bai Avabai Petit were adjudged the overall champions in the bys and girls section respectively.

Over 850 children from 21 schools competed in the races. Air-India’s football coach, Bimal Ghosh was the chief guest and gave away the prizes.

U-12 (2 kms): 1. Naeem Jagani (St Andrew’s HS), 2. Jadhav S Bhagwan 3. Paste K Chandrakant (both Supari Tank Municipal HS). Timing: 7min.49secs.U-10 (1 km): 1. Craig Perrira , 2. Kayzad Irani, 3. Chris Fletcher (all St Stanislaus HS). Timing: 4min.55secs.

GIRLS U-17 (3 kms): 1. Gayatri Gandhi (Bai Avabai Framji HS) 2. Sabaa Khan (St Joseph’s Convent), 3. Leena Sawhni (Bai Avabai Framji HS). Timing: 14min.14secs.

U-14 (2 kms): 1. Ashita Misquitta (St Joseph’s Convent) , 2. Monaz Jilla, 3. Nifriz Framna (both Bai Avabai Framji HS). Timing: 7min.55secs.U-12 (1.5 kms): 1. Shimona D’Costa, 2. Cordelia Fonseca (both St Joseph’s 3. Tanya Lobo (Apostolic Carmel HS). Timing: 6min.21secs.

U-10 (1 km): 1. Sana Khan (Bai Avabai Framji HS), 2. Nisha Nair (Duruelo COnvent HS), 3. Karishma Kapadia (Bai Avabai Framji HS). Timing: 5min.21secs.Jindal Cup Squash THE Indian Squash Professionals will be holding a squash tournament for the Jindal Cup at the Jindal Recreation Complex, Vashind, Shahapur in Thane District.

The three-day event will feature only 12 teams including two for host teams. Each team will comprise of five players and a reserve.

A cash prize of Rs 51,000 is up for grabs with the winners emerging richer by Rs 21,000 and the runners-up and third-placed teams netting Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.

The tournament is sponsored by Jindal Iron & Steel Co., Ltd.

Entry forms should be faxed to Mr Raman Madhok (496 1400) or to the ISP (852 55 89) before August 27, 1997, says a release.

St Joseph triumph

St Joseph scored an emphatic 3-0 victory over Jamnabai Narsee (Juhu) in an Under 12 III C Inter Schools Football match at the St Francis D’Assisi Ground, last Friday. Grenville Murzello starred in Joseph’s win with a triumphant hat-trick.

Shamin Khan shines

Down with a triple bogey on the 17th, Shamin Khan rallied from behind to share the top spot with Sadanandan and Rajeev Ali, to win the PGAI Qualifier, according to a Tiger Corporation release on Friday. Khan came good on the last 36 holes to tally 286 points and win the top honours. Khan pocketed Rs 7000.

Hari Ram (Kanpur) at 287 finished 4th while M Bindra with 290 was 5th. Bunty Randhava (291) and Rajiv Mohta (295) were among the stars down the list.
