It was a warm Monday afternoon. The security guard at the Out-Patient Department (OPD) at JJ Hospital was at his seat as usual when he heard babies crying.

When he stepped out to take a look, the guard—he refused to divulge his name—found two four-day-old baby girls abandoned on a bench outside the OPD.

‘‘I think they were left there for over two hours, bundled in white cloth. It was only when I heard them crying that I realised the bundle contained babies,’’ he said.

As word about the babies—who only weigh 1 kg—spread, nurses, ayaahs and patients gathered to catch a glimpse of the ‘‘stars for the day,’’ as a nurse put it.

Unknown Number 1 and 2—as the babies will be referred to now—were then shifted to the paediatric ward for emergency care.

With thick, black locks of hair and an active appetite, Number 1 and 2 finally calmed down after resident doctors rocked them in their arms.

Doctors suspect that the babies are twins and were hungry for over four hours.

Others say they were probably left behind intentionally.

‘‘Their blood sugar levels have dropped causing hypoglycaemia and their hands and feet have gone cold. But they will recover with nutrition,’’ head of the Paediatric Department, Dr A Rathod, said.

Doctors said that any delay in giving them emergency care could have caused brain damage and convulsions. Both babies were then fed liquids through infant-feeding tubes and examined for physical injuries.

The J J Marg police are investigating the whereabouts of the parents. If nobody comes to claim the babies, they will be shifted to Asha Sadan Home, Umerkhadi.
