The lawyer of Abdul Karim Telgi, prime accused in the fake stamp paper scam, today told the Bombay High Court of an alleged conspiracy to eliminate Judge S.M. Shembole, who is hearing the case, at the behest of the former Mumbai police commissioner.

Abdul Rehman filed a letter before the court which alleged that Shembole was a facing a ‘‘threat’’ from R.S. Sharma. ‘‘I have just intimated the Chief Justice here and I am flying to file a petition in the Supreme Court,’’ he said.

Rehman claimed he learnt about Sharma’s link with the underworld when he had visited him at Yeravada Jail on July 23. ‘‘He has strong ties with the underworld and specially with members of the Dawood Ibrahim gang,’’ the letter alleged. The lawyer alleged that he came to know about a conspiracy to kill Shembole on September 14 in Pune, where he had gone to appear for Telgi.

‘‘A conspiracy is being hatched to eliminate Shembole (apparently in a road accident) to terrorise the judiciary,’’ the letter added. Yesterday, Rehman made a spate of allegations against politicians and claimed that a national-level leader from Maharashtra was the real kingpin. Without naming anyone, he alleged Telgi was a frontman and three to four other politicians from the state and Karnataka were involved.
