AHMEDABAD, JAN 9: There’s finally hope — and a homegrown solution at hand — for the estimated 40 million Indians who suffer from Erectile Dysfunction (ED). Penegra, the desi avatar of Viagra, will be introduced in Ahmedabad on Tuesday and all over the country the next day following a green signal from the Drug Controller of India.

Zydus Cadila’s Penegra, in tablet form, will be available in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg at leading medical shops in Ahmedabad and in retail outlets across the country the next day.

Ganesh Naik, Zydus Cadila’s president, said the company has received permission from the Drug Controller of India to launch the drug sildenafil citrate under the brand name Penegra, which Pfizer sells as Viagra. The real thing is available in the grey market for Rs 500-600 per tablet.

The 25 mg tablet will be available for Rs 12 each, the 50 mg for Rs 18 and the 100 mg for Rs 27 each. The light blue coloured, diamond shaped Penegra tablets will be accompanied by a brochure containing answers to frequently asked questions about ED.

Naik cautioned that the tablets would not be available over the counter unless a prescription from a urologist or sexologist is produced.
