The April 30 ‘‘maha rally’’ of RJD, in which partymen have been asked to assemble with lathis is generating a lot of heat in the state politics, with the ruling party gearing up to make the occasion a grand success and the Opposition criticising this as a ‘‘dangerous trend’’.

RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav has expressed confidence that the ‘‘sampradayikta bhagao desh bachao’’ (do away with communalism, save the country) rally would be historic in which lakhs of people would assemble heralding BJP’s downfall across the country.

RJD secretary general Ram Kripal Yadav said that there was nothing wrong in Laloo appealing to party workers to fight communalism with lathis. ‘‘Lathi is a symbolic identity of a farmer and a common villager. Even Gandhi used lathi to fight the British rule,’’ he said.

However, the leaders of BJP, Samata, CPI and other parties have opposed this and has said that the call to participate in the rally with lathis could lead to law and order problems . Senior BJP leader S.K. Modi has asked Governor V.C. Pande to instruct the state to put a ban on display of lathis at public meetings. He said display of lathis by RJD workers was promoting violence and the ruling party’s men were extorting money in the name of the rally.

Meanwhile, the traders under the banner of Bihar Vyavsayi Sangars Morcha led by sacked RJD leader and former finance minister Shankar Prasad Tekriwal met here yesterday and criticised harassment of traders by RJD workers in the name of the rally.
