With the July 22 trust vote heralding the election season, every single move in the Election Commission will increasingly come under the scanner. This means the well-known differences between Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswami and the two Election Commissioners Navin B Chawla and S Y Quraishi are back to the fore. Chawla and Quraishi, it’s learnt, have arrived at an informal understanding to “keep a watchful eye” on the CEC and have decided not to be out of town at the same time, as this would leave Gopalaswami “a free hand” in administrative matters.
