The BJP parliamentary party, which meets tomorrow, is likely to elect former deputy prime minister L.K. Advani as its leader — setting the stage for his recognition as the Leader of the Opposition.

The party is also likely to amend its constitution to elect former prime minister A.B. Vajpayee as the chairman of the parliamentary party. Former Finance minister Jaswant Singh is likely to be elected the leader of the party in the Rajya Sabha.

However, more important is the revamp of the party organisation in order to cast it in the mode of a vibrant Opposition. Those tipped for major responsibilities include former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh and ministers Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Rajnath Singh and Yashwant Sinha.

While Sinha and Kalyan Singh may be made vice-presidents, Swaraj and Jaitley are likely to be installed as general secretaries replacing Anita Arya and Shivraj Singh Chauhan. Former I&B minister Ravishankar Prasad may be made a secretary.

Sources disclosed that the parliamentary party is unlikely to elect any other office-bearers. It may adopt a resolution giving a discretion to newly-elected leaders to nominate deputy leaders, chief whips and other office-bearers.

Along side, party president Venkaiah Naidu has to constitute the national executive. The new body is expected to reflect an infusion of fresh blood at a larger scale.
