The VHP today promised to work for the Congress in the Assembly and Parliamentary polls if the party supports the construction of Ram temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya.

‘‘VHP will support Congress in the coming Assembly and Parliament polls, provided it supports the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya,’’ VHP international general secretary Praveen Togadia said.

Togadia, who was here to mobilise support for VHP’s proposed agitation in front of the Parliament from March 27 to April 2, said all political parties should clarify their stand on the temple issue.

He claimed that senior Congress leaders, including the CMs of Uttaranchal and MP were in favour of a Ram temple at the disputed site. He said: ‘‘Congress ke saath hamara tal hai aur BJP ke saath mel (We share the rhythm with Congress and views with the BJP).’’ The VHP wants a ‘‘talmel (a blend of the two)’’, he added. Togadia emphasised since talks with the Muslim leadership have failed and the judiciary is not in a position to decide issues of faith, only a legislation can solve the impasse.

He urged the ruling BJP and the main Opposition, Congress, to clarify their stand on enacting a legislation for the construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya. He also demanded that the undisputed 47 acres of land adjacent to the disputed site be immediately handed over to the Ramjanambhoomi Nyas.
