While three chandeliers were being strung up on Monday inside a Red Fort replica designed by Bollywood’s Nitin Desai for a five-day BJP soul search, its leaders and footsoldiers were busy thumbing a 34-second MMS clip—the target is 10,000 messages by Tuesday.

Urged by Pramod Mahajan to ensure that the BJP marks its silver jubilee in stride, with latest gadgetry, partymen are punching MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) to invite professionals, loyalists and just about everybody for the December 29 Rajat Jayanti public meeting at Shivaji Park in Dadar, to hear Atal Behari Vajpayee and L K Advani.

‘‘I had actor Vivek Oberoi in mind for the MMS audio, but I could not trace him,’’ says BJP’s south Mumbai district president Atul Shah, who lent his voice to the clip, scripted and designed the MMS inviting people to Shivaji Park. ‘‘We had sent 3,000 by Monday afternoon.’’

‘‘People should not think MMS is only about Mallika Saherawat,’’ says BJP corporator Parul Mehta, who’s keeping count of the numbers sent until December 29.

‘‘We are showing how MMS can also be used commercially for a good purpose,’’ says Mehta, earnestly. ‘‘Our target for Tuesday is to send a minimum of 10,000 MMS.’’ BJP state general secretary Vinod Tawde forwarded the MMS—inaugurated by Mahajan recently—to 124 professionals, and 61 replied so far.

‘‘All district, taluka leaders and workers have lists of people to send MMS to mobilise crowds for Shivaji Park,’’ says Tawde. ‘‘From my list of architects, engineers etc, I expect at least 75 to attend.’’

By Monday, trials were on to send the MMS—with the Vande Mataram song—in bulk messages. Printed cards of the lotus and the id http://www.bjp25.org are also being handed out to all attending the meet.

BJP state chief Nitin Gadkari hopes partymen gather crowds to surpass all records of political rallies held at Shivaji Park. But only GPRS-enabled cellphones—for high speed wireless Internet and data communication—can send and download MMS, so partymen now have a reason to upgrade cellphones to the latest technology.
