Less than a month before the Afro-Asian Games begin, top officials of the hosts, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), are hard at work in Hyderabad. Perhaps they should be in New Delhi because, according to their own website, that’s where the inaugural Games are to be held.
At a time when one could expect it to get maximum hits, the IOA site (htpp://indianolympic.
hypermart.net) says the AAG will be held in New Delhi from November 3 to 11, 2001. Things become clearer when you see the note on the homepage: the website was last updated on April 15, 2001.
That’s why the site lists athletics, boxing, football, shooting, swimming and tennis as events during the Games. Next month’s edition of the Games in Hyderabad also features hockey and weightlifting.
‘‘It’s a shame’’, admitted IOA secretary-general Randhir Singh when The Indian Express contacted him in Hyderabad today. ‘‘Yes, we should have updated it a long time ago. Unfortunately, there were some technical problems. We will work on it right away and get the site up to date with all information soon.’’
Meanwhile, for accurate information — and details about weather, travel, etc — it’s best to log on to http://www.afroasiangames.org, launched by the Games organising committee in Hyderabad.
Interestingly, the ‘‘useful links’’ section makes no mention of the IOA’s site!
