In a CII meet on ‘Entertainment East’, focussing on film industry, Subhash Ghai, the film maker said that immense opportunities were opening up in film making and Bengal must gear itself up to take the advantage.

It was a “mismatch between art and commerce,” implying the dwindling flow of private funds into the industry that Ghai felt was at the root of Bengali film industry collapsing after having dominated not only Mumbai but in various western countries as well.

But in the present context it was just not enough to cry for funds and sit idle by film makers or state governments, he said. The industry would have to be prepared to take advantage of “corporatisation.” He hoped that Bengali film makers would move with time. With film making being awarded the status of industry options have opened up. Apart from nationalised banks, corporate houses like Tata, Birla and Reliance are keen on financing good productions but one has to be prepared to grab the opportunity, he said.

Ghai disclosed that Mukta Arts will start financing regional films as there is a “niche market” for good and different kinds of productions now. He has invited Ritupoarno Ghosh to direct a film funded by Ghai himself. The talks are at a preliminary stage, he added.
