AHMEDABAD, Sept 30: Five children were killed and eight others were injured when a truck overturned on them near Pansia village in Palanpur taluka of Banaskantha district late on Tuesday night.
Banaskantha district superintendent of police Rahul Sharma informed the children, in the age group of 10 to 12 years, were walking to Danta village to watch `garba’ when at around 11 p.m. a speeding truck overturned on them.
The truck (GJ-9-T-5828) was carrying marble which fell on the children. While three of the deceased were crushed on the spot, two died after sometime, said the police.
The deceased have been identified as Mohan Vaja Taral, Soma Vaja, Bachu Nahat, Kiran Bhema Taral and Mushru. The injured included Ramesh Neta Taral, Jashu Nana Taral, Jyot Nana Taral, Dita Kala, Vinod Bhema, Karna Nana, Manisha Vaja and Punkiben.
They have been admitted to Danta primary health centre and Palanpur Civil Hospital with minor injuries, police said adding the truck driver was absconding.
A case has been registered with Danta police station and sub-inspector G V Gohil is investigation.
