Following directives of the high command, the state BJP today finally suspended five rebel MLAs, Anil Paswan, Daya Shankar Verma, Narendra Singh Verma, Kovid Kumar Singh and Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh. Prior to the suspension, party state president Keshri Nath Tripathi summoned an emergency meeting of party MLAs here.

Justifying the move, Tripathi said the party would not tolerate any kind of indiscipline in any way. Referring to Ballia MLA Ram Iqbal Singh, who had recently been vocal against BJPLP leader Lalji Tandon, Tripathi said that his case should set a precedence before others who were taking the same path.

The suspended MLAs had started their rebellion against the party’s policies just before the Assembly elections in 2002. The party had then issued notices to all the MLAs.

Just before the Lok Sabha elections, Tandon withdrew a writ against them, which was lying with the Speaker. Tandon had given them a show-cause notice recently when the MLAs were spotted sitting at the treasury benches. The MLAs had then said if Tandon could meet Mulayam, so could they. One of the rebels, Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh had even blamed party stalwarts like Atal Behari Vajpayee, L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi of functioning like ‘‘a private company’’.
