Newly-appointed Air Chief Marshal S.P. Tyagi and his wife Vandana Tyagi left for Port Blair on Monday evening on what is his first official visit in his new capacity. Apart from visiting tsunami-affected areas, an IAF spokesperson said Tyagi would take stock of the reconstruction of the IAF base at Car Nicobar, being carried out by a Works Team dispatched by Air Headquarters just before New Year.

The IAF has confirmed one officer dead and several missing. A visit to study the destruction at Car Nicobar was also former Air chief marshal S. Krishaswamy’s last official engagement before he retired on December 31. Another Naval vessel INS Sharabh left for Port Blair to augment the evacuation process with packaged drinking water and food materials.
