There’s good news for the northeastern region. The first lot of the Centre-sponsored road upgradation projects in the Northeast — under the ambitious Special Accelerated Road Development Programme (SARDP) Phase A — is set to be completed by March this year. Spread across 200 km, it would include strategic roads through insurgency-hit areas, parts of the historic Stilwell road, the shortest road link to Bhutan, and the Gangtok-Nathu La road.

“About 24 km of the Stilwell road will be two-laned and out of this, 11 km will be upgraded by March. The Stilwell road starts from Ledo in Assam and winds its way through 56 km in India, before it goes via Pangsau pass into Myanmar and moves into China. Besides, a 32 km-long section on NH 36, that connects Assam with Nagaland border and traverses through the insurgency-hit North Cachar hills area serving the Karbi-Anglong sections, will be upgraded,” said an official from the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport & Highways which is undertaking the implementation of SARDP.

The road level of a stretch along NH 154, along Silchar-Aizwal section, will be raised to avoid it from being submerged in flood waters. Sections along NH 53, 54, 152 will see several road sections upgraded to two-laned ones with paved shoulders by March end.

The 29.2 km-long road between Pathshala in Assam to Nganglam on Bhutan border along NH 152 will see 12 km completed by March end and construction of 9 km portion of a new road is set to begin once environmental clearances are in place. The project will see 10 km of the 63 km-long link between Gangtok and Nathu La upgraded. All these roads will have paved shoulders. That apart, 2 km-long stretch along NH 51, that will go to Bangladesh border via Tura-a district headquarters and home town of P A Sangma, and NH 61 — connecting Nagaland with Assam via NH 37 and providing link to a major paper corporation mill in Tuli in Nagaland — will also see upgradation by March end.

While SARDP Phase A was to originally cover 1,310 km, it was expanded to 2,304 km by 2007 end. The Phase A is targeted for completion by 2012-13 and Phase B is scheduled for a 2015-16 deadline.
